New Vic Theatre announces new adaptation of classic children’s story The Wind In The Willows for Christmas 2018

19th March 2018

The New Vic will stage a brand new adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind In The Willows for Christmas 2018, following on from the theatre’s successful recent adaptations of Treasure Island, and The Snow Queen, which won the 2017 UK Theatre Award for Best Show for Children and Young People.

On stage from Saturday 17 November 2018 until Saturday 26 January 2019, The Wind In The Willows will be adapted by New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins, and directed by Peter Leslie Wild (Chester Mystery Plays, 2018; Dial M for Murder, Seeing The Lights, New Vic).

Featuring all of the familiar characters from the classic children’s story including Mole, Rat, Toad and Badger, this beloved tale of adventure, courage and the value of friendship will be brought to life in the theatre’s trademark style and is a heart-warming story all ages of family members can enjoy together.

New Vic Artistic Director Theresa Heskins, who will adapt Kenneth Grahame’s story for the stage said: “The wit and charm of Kenneth Grahame’s novel is such a delight: no matter how many times I read it, it makes me chuckle. And Toad’s zest for adventure I’ve found utterly irresistible.  Bringing these characters to New Vic audiences will be a joy and a privilege; and working with Peter Leslie Wild, who first encouraged me to try my hand at adapting a novel when I arrived at the New Vic 11 years ago, will be a special treat for me. ”

Peter Leslie Wild, who will direct The Wind In The Willows, said: “I am delighted to be returning to the New Vic and to have the chance to direct a version of one of my favourite books. I have so many happy memories of reading it to my own children when they were young and am looking forward to bringing it to life for the children and families of Staffordshire and beyond. And it is very exciting to be collaborating with Theresa Heskins again, who has so much experience of Christmas shows at the Vic.”
