New Vic nominated for major award!

The New Vic is delighted to announce that its spectacular production of Alice in Wonderland has been nominated for a major theatre honour.

The acclaimed show, staged at the theatre-in-the-round last Christmas, is in the running for Best Show for Children and Young People in the Theatre Awards UK, the premier award ceremony which celebrates performing arts spanning the length and breadth of the country.

Adapted for the stage and directed by New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins, Alice in Wonderland cast magic over North Staffordshire last Christmas, with 37,000 people, including more than 20,000 children, seeing the production.

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s photograph of Alice Pleasance Liddell pictured as a street child in rags, Theresa’s adaptation presented an Alice who lived on a canal barge, parting from John Tenniel’s classic image of a blonde-haired, pinafore-wearing girl to tell the story of a child’s education.

Brimming with theatrical trickery and illusions galore, the show wowed the crowds and was met with rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, with The Guardian hailing it as being ‘utterly frabjous!’

Theresa said: “I have a huge Cheshire Cat smile on my face! It’s so rewarding to see the work we do for young people and their families recognised in this way.”

The New Vic faces competition from The Curious Scrapbook of Josephine Bean tour by Shona Reppe and Unicorn Theatre production Something Very Far Away.

The awards ceremony, organised by the Theatrical Management Association, will take place in front the crème de la crème of national theatre at London’s Guildhall on Sunday 28 October.
