Learning to care

Care professionals of the future have been given the chance to achieve a new award thanks to a partnership between New Vic Borderlines and health and social recruitment service Care Match.

The Open College Network accredited award, Working with Dignity in Health and Social Care Settings, was launched by County Councillor Matthew Ellis at the Young People’s Care Conferences which were held at the New Vic in early October.

Susan Moffat, Director of award-winning New Vic Borderlines, said: “This specially written award allows us to put dignity on the top of the agenda and ensures that young people can become champions of vulnerable people they work with in the future.”

County Councillor Ellis, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet Member for Adult Wellbeing, said: “This new award will put dignity at the heart of everything these young people do, and also set them on the path to caring as a career option.”

Around 180 young people attended the conferences which were developed by New Vic Borderlines in partnership with Care Match and supported by Staffordshire County Council.

The young delegates were given the chance to achieve the new award through participating in the event while discovering their own strengths as potential care workers.

Shirley Way, Care Match manager, said: “We want to ensure the people of Staffordshire have a quality workforce to provide quality care services. The young people who attended these conferences and undertook this new award are our workforce of the future.”

A presentation, entitled Living Stories, formed the centerpiece of the event and featured documentary stories from DEAF Vibe, a user led charity working with people who are hearing impaired, and the Alzheimer’s Society.

Susan Moffat added: “We also focused on cerebral palsy from both the perspective of a teenage boy and his father.

“These moving stories had the common themes of dignity and respect running through them and allowed the young delegates to step into the world of care and explore the positive ways in which they can have an impact as the caring professionals of the future.”
