Robert Powell joins anniversary celebrations!

Star of stage and screen Robert Powell has joined the New Vic in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Victoria Theatre Company.

Powell, best known for the title role in Jesus of Nazareth, was one of the first actors to tread the boards at the Victoria Theatre, Hartshill, the 1960s appearing in productions such as The Three Musketeers.

This week, he joined a host of former company members in London to mark the Vic/New Vic’s 50th birthday.

In North Staffordshire, the young company of A Christmas Carol joined New Vic staff and volunteers to celebrate the big day, while messages from well-wishers from across the globe poured in throughout the day.

The Victoria Theatre opened in a converted back-street cinema on 9 October 1962 and quickly built an international reputation, particularly for its unique theatre documentaries about North Staffordshire life.

Today, in its purpose-built theatre-in-round it is the producing theatre for Staffordshire, with nine major productions a year designed, directed, built, promoted and presented here in Staffordshire.

New Vic Artistic Director, Theresa Heskins, said: “First in a converted cinema in Hartshill, and for the past twenty-six years in the New Vic, we’ve been making great theatre-in-the-round that has been a force for change in our community.”

She added: “The Vic and the New Vic have both instilled a real love of theatre in the community and, as a result, we have some of the most committed audiences in the country.”
