YOUNG PEOPLE EXPLORE THEIR BACKSTAGE SKILLS IN NEW VIC EDUCATION HALF-TERM PROJECT

27th May 2026

This week New Vic Education are hosting an exciting four-day programme inviting young people to experience theatre behind-the-scenes by working alongside industry professionals to learn essential skills in lighting, sound, design and costume.

From designing and creating costumes and props to operating lights and sound effects, participants aged between 13 – 19 have been gaining hands-on experience and insight into what makes a theatre production come to life from behind-the-scenes.

Today, participants have been working with the New Vic props department to create large buttons for the theatre’s Christmas production, The Borrowers.

The story of The Borrowers follows the lives of the tiny Clock family who are only four inches tall and live beneath the floorboards of a domestic household. In order to create the illusion that the cast are only four inches tall, the set design will feature ‘enlarged’ household items as props that are 25 times larger than their true form. Following the same process that will be employed later in the year by the New Vic’s creative team, the group have been using frisbees to produce a series of large buttons.
