Stories In Space | James Fox Creative

Jay Neville, working as James Fox Creative, crafts storytelling maps to satisfy a fundamental human ache: the need to feel situated. In an ephemeral digital age, Neville’s work attempts to anchor the personal journey back into the physical world, creating a “map for life” to navigate the space between the internal and external worlds.

His practice subverts traditional cartography by scaling a landscape based on emotional weight rather than geographic size. A best friend’s house can carry the same monumental presence as a National Trust property; the major landmarks are those of personal significance.

Drawing on the adventure maps of his youth—from Kensuke’s Kingdom to Pokémon— Jay explores psychogeography through the lens of his native Stoke-on-Trent and other localities of the North of England. He uses these maps to navigate the interplay between place and identity, documenting how we truly inhabit the storied landscapes that hold our lives
