Folk

Fri 7 May–Sat 29 May

New Vic Production

By Nell Leyshon
Directed by Polly Wain

Some stories are worth holding on to.

Louie’s mind overflows with songs passed down by her mother, songs that connect her to her family, her community and generations of rural tradition.

When a stranger visits from out of town, an unlikely friendship begins. Cecil Sharp is determined to preserve the songs for future generations. Together, Louie and Cecil begin to capture the melodies and stories on paper, bringing a rich oral tradition into a changing world.

But when songs that have belonged to a community are written down, who do they belong to? And what might be lost in the telling?

Inspired by the true story of composer Cecil Sharp, who collected and transcribed thousands of traditional songs for preservation at the turn of the twentieth century, Folk is a moving drama about music, memory and the traditions that shape us, told with beautiful songs, delicate music and heartfelt emotion.
