Caroline Wilkes

Director

Caroline is Associate Director at the New Vic as well as being an Artistic Associate at Birmingham Rep. She is the Artistic Director of a large collective of theatre makers from across the Midlands where she leads on artist development. She is a Graeae Beyond alumni and was the recipient of a JMK Regional Director Award, a Leverhulme Arts Scholar and has been an RTYDS Connect Artist. Most recently (Dec 2023-Jan 2024) she has directed Kath Chandler’s premiere of Little Red Riding Hood at Birmingham Rep which is a show with integrated Makaton. This show has just completed a 5 week run at Birmingham Rep and is currently on tour across the Midlands. Caroline has a Masters in Community Theatre where she focussed on the work of Peter Cheeseman at the New Vic.

Directing credits include: Little Red Riding Hood (Birmingham Rep and tour); Jack and the Magical Beanstalk (Birmingham Rep and tour); Starting Out (Birmingham Rep, Hackney Showroom and Southbank Centre); Open Doors (South East Asian Festival of the Arts); For the Past 30 Years (Birmingham Rep and Women and Theatre); Salvaged (Bedlam Festival of Arts and Mental Health, Birmingham Rep); Faultlines (made in collaboration with women’s refuge, Edinburgh Fringe and national tour); Hark (digital theatre production and national tour); Darkness Falls (Edinburgh Fringe and national tour); The Masque of the Red Death (devised with 50 actors, University of Leeds). Caroline is currently developing an adaptation of Cool by Michael Morpurgo, collaborating with Birmingham Rep and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
